Please Help Pierre!
Meet Go Boxer Rescue's most recent special needs Boxer, "Pierre."
This boxer pup barely a year old was sadly left at vet by his owners because they couldn't afford the medical care needed to save him.
Pierre suffered from a severe case of juvenile demodetic mange which led to a secondary skin infection along with other mysterious life threatening complications. Although stable, Pierre still had a long road to recovery. He needed a caring rescue to help and give him time to heal. The vet contacted Go Boxer Rescue!
Pierre came into GOBR in early March, underweight and nearly hairless. His skin hot to the touch from the mange, yet he was cold from the lack of hair. He also showed signs of abdominal discomfort. Over all he was in very poor condition.
Since his rescue, Pierre has had a few close calls. The first a scary toxic reaction to the Ivermectin. Pierre had difficulty walking, he would even sway nearly falling over while sitting and clear signs of abdominal pain. Thankfully our GOBR vet prescribed ProMeris to treat the mange.
The ProMeris did the job, within no time Pierre's beautiful brindle coat began to grow. He was putting on weight, gaining 8 pounds in two weeks.
Nearly a month went by when suddenly one afternoon Pierre faced another battle. Clearly in a lot of abdominal pain Pierre was again taken to the vet where more tests, more xrays still gave no clues as to what was going on . His condition rapidly worsened. Exploratory surgery revealed no motility in Pierre's small intestines (ileus). His gut was loaded with Helicobacter. His immune system had been so taxed since the onset of mange that this bacteria took a dangerous foot hold causing inflammation, pain and managed to shut down his digestive system. Finally the mysterious abdominal pain was uncovered and treatable with strong antibiotics!
Through out his ups and downs Pierre has been a wonderful patient. He has a joyful personality and now that he's on the road to recovery and feeling better he's a happy playful boy..
Of course helping Pierre didn't come without cost. Even with the discounted vet care and donated lab tests the medical bills are over $1000.00.
