Sophie - 3497

llWednesday February 20, 2008ll

HI, I am Sophie. Yes I am a young girl who has had a rough start in life. I broke my right hind leg(distal tibia) at the growth plate around the first of the year. Plus I had an open sore close to break. I developed an infection. Two weeks later my family decided that they couldn't help me any more so they surrender me to GO Boxer Rescue.

Reverse Brindle Boxer Sophie - Lap time !!

My foster family picked me up. But for some reason, I didn't get to spend much time at first at my foster family's home. I had to spend my first three days(in the rescue) at the vet's. My foster mom said that was due to me being so sick. I came in with a high fever, open sore, and a broken leg. I did get to go home for the week-end. But for some odd reason, my foster mom wouldn't let me play. I had to stay on someone's lap or in the my crate.

Reverse Brindle Boxer Sophie - Resting Happily

My foster dad took me back to the vet's office on Monday. They had to sedate me to get a splint/cast on my leg. Plus my vet took a culture of my open sore. Now that I have the cast/splint on, I have to go to the vet's every other day to change the bandages. During this time, I was taking antibiotics to try to clear up the infection. But my sore just wasn't healing.

The results of my culture came back--- very very bad news my foster mom said. I have a drug resistant bacterial infection and they believe a bone infection. They changed my antibiotics.

I continued to go to the vet's three times a week for a badaged change. A week later, the vet's decided to change my antibotics again due to this not getting better. I have now been on this medicine for 19 days. My sore is now healed up.

Unfortunately the damage is done. On Monday February 18, the vet took more x-rays. My growth plate was too damaged from the break and the infection. My bad leg is now shorter than the good one. Plus it is starting to turn inward. My foster mom said that I will have to loose my leg. I don't know what that means but I know my foster mom says that I will be able to play all I want soon. I can't wait to be able to play and act like a normal young girl.

All of Sophie's treatment has been costly. Plus the cost will be going up for her up coming surgery.

Sophie is doing fairly well. She does great on three legs. I have been taking her on very short walks. She loves it.

We let her play outside today while we clean up the yard (scooping poop). Unfortunately I believe we may have let her play to long. She acts like her leg hurts some tonight. Also unfortunately, Sophie will be losing her leg. I call tomorrow to schedule her surgery. The growth plate is ruined/gone, and her leg won't grow correctly. I will let everyone know when this will be done.

Sophie is home and doing well. She has had something to eat and has been outside to do her business. She is resting here on her favorite person's lap, Candy

Sophie was at Dr. Thorn’s yesterday. She had her staples removed and lost her e-collar. He felt that she is doing great and just to watch her temperature after she runs out of antibiotics. He started on ivermec for the Mange. Sophie was finally able to start her shots yesterday. Yeah!!! I know she is getting better now.

I guess Sophie thinks it is okay to run like the wind since her collar is off. She has been running in the backyard today as fast as she can. It is so cute to watch. I will try to get some pictures of her later today.
