Pet of the Month
Fagin #3567 - Pictures and Story
Hi, I am Fagin. I came into Go Boxer Rescue with the name Marciano but my new foster mom has been calling me Fagin. She says its because I'm a little Dickens. She tells me that is a pun but I don't know what a pun is. I think it means thief. I'm a handsome 14-month old boy who is neutered and up to date on shots. I'm completely house broken and am so smart I learned to use a dog door in just two days. I get along with the other 4 dogs (two are deaf like me) in my foster family although there is a lot of competition for lap time. I'm not too crazy about my crate and I play keep away when it is time to go in there. My foster mom is trickier than me most of the time. Once I'm in the crate, though, I am good and I sleep. My foster mom has some birds. Holy Cow! What are birds doing in the house? I have a strong prey drive and probably would not be great with cats. But, we don't have cats here so that is just a guess. I'm good with children but, would do best if they are a bit older--over 7. My foster mom is taking me to obedience classes. Right now, I'm a little suspicious and, when asked to come, I just know that something bad will happen so I don't do it. I am a high energy guy and would probably do best in a family with at least one other dog to play with. Mom says, "a tired dog is a good dog."
If you have the love and the time for me please adopt me? Please go to Go Boxer Rescue to complete an Application to Adopt so they know you would like to adopt ME! Be sure to mention my name on the Application to Adopt. Remember, I'm Fagin.

Fagin still doesn't love his crate but I can get him in there if he's on leash. My cleaning lady puts him in there with no resistance if I'm away and she has to leave. He is pretty good on a leash in general. We didn't complete the obedience classes and will make them up after New Year. At the first class, he went around and marked the room and then peed on one of the other dogs. I was very embarrassed. I will be keeping him on lead next go round at least until I'm sure he won't do that again.
I took him with me to do a home visit and he was well behaved in the home and with the other dogs in the home. He's not a real dominant dog. When my dogs fuss at him, he backs down.
We haven't had a lot of visitors but he is good when people come. All my dogs welcome visitors or the UPS guy or whatever so he is in the program with that. He's basically friendly. I had a a friend come by with her 2-year old and he was good with the child.
However, I would call him wary. If he gets out, you can't catch him. Unlike my others, he won't just jump in the car if that is an option offered. When we are going somewhere, I take him to the car on lead while the others just trot out and jump in. I feel as though his trust was broken and that when he would come, something unpleasant was the result so now he won't come. We are working on that.
Blue and Fagin. Fagin is on the right here. He is not very good in the car. He doesn't settle. When we went on the home visit, I took him and Blue and it was 2 hours before he settled down and slept (three hour drive each way). However, at this time of year while it is cool out, I take the dogs with me a lot and he is getting a lot of practice. I have a seat belt for him that came with him and maybe I will strap him in or put up my wagon barrier.
Today, I was distracted and my cockatiel came out of the cage and flew over to me and was on my shoulder. Fagin stared at him but when I bent over to clean Fagin's feet (Lord I hate this rainy weather) he didn't go for him. He doesn't bother the cages much.
Today, also, for the first time since he's been here, I let the dogs have rawhides. He spent a lot of time trying to find a place to bury and hide his. This was part of the above distraction I referred to with the birds where I had to intercept the muddy filthy rawhide and wipe feet.

He's a very sweet and endearing dog with lots of personality but he is not what I would call an easy dog. He requires supervision and direction more than many. He or Blue got a red liquid ink pen this morning and chewed it up and they are both now in full Christmas decoration with red spots all over their white coats. It was still wet when I discovered it so I got it out of the bedroom rug.
He is still into stealing things off of counters and tables and I have a squirt bottle that is an effective deterrent but he hasn't made the connection yet that counter surfing is bad. He's fast, too.
He loves toys but they are ALL now out in the yard. That is a frustration but for someone without a dog door it wouldn't be a problem. If we ever get a break in the weather, we'll retrieve them. My other puppy, Blue, is unhappy that all the toys are out there.
